Add a voice for Read Aloud
Read Aloud uses the free voices built into your phone or computer. If you see "needs an English voice", add one like this, then reopen the book.
Android phone
- Open Settings, search for "Text-to-speech" and open "Text-to-speech output".
- Choose "Speech Services by Google" as the preferred engine. If it is missing, install it from the Play Store.
- Tap the gear next to it, then "Install voice data", and download "English (Nigeria)", "English (United Kingdom)" or "English (United States)".
- Use Chrome to read your book, and close and reopen the book.
iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → English.
- Tap a voice (for example an "Enhanced" one) and download it.
- Make sure the side switch is not on silent, turn up the volume, and reopen the book in Safari.
- Read Aloud starts when you tap Listen (iPhones only allow speech after a tap).
Computer
- Use the latest Chrome, Edge or Safari. Edge has many natural English voices.
- Windows: Settings → Time & language → Speech → Add voices. Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System voice → Manage voices.
Read Aloud usually stops when the screen locks. Keep the screen on while listening.
